A life on the bandstand: Roy Cape

Everybody familiar with Soca and Calypso knows the legendary band leader and saxophonist Roy Cape. His career started in the early 60s and is still going strong with the Roy Cape All Stars band – a music professional for 50 years!

He started in the 60s with the famous band leaders of that time in Trinidad – Selwyn Wheeler, Clarence Curvan and Ron Berridge. Later Roy Cape recorded with Sparrow’s Troubadours on the 1969 recording of ‘Sa Sa Yea’ and ‘Bongo’. Although Roy Cape is treated for prostate cancer, the 72-year-old soca veteran is still touring the world with his own band Roy Cape Allstars, which also has 8 albums out.

To honor his life and musical legacy a compilation and a book has been released. The CD Roy Cape: A Calypso & Soca Anthology was compiled and produced by Alvin Daniell (MAJOR&minor) with recordings from every band Cape has played in since the 1960s – released worldwide on Faluma.
